Photographers who left a mark: Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson: Master of the Cinematic Photograph

Gregory Crewdson’s work has always fascinated me for its ability to create entire worlds within a single frame. Last year – in 2023 – I had the pleasure to see his show and live presentation of a making of his new black and white photography series “Eveningside” at the Rencontres d’Arles festival.

Born in Brooklyn and educated at Yale, Crewdson’s approach to photography is unique, blending the precision of film production with the stillness of photography.

Crewdson’s images are meticulously staged, often involving a large crew and complex setups. His series like “Twilight,” “Beneath the Roses,” and “Cathedral of the Pines” are prime examples of his ability to craft haunting, cinematic scenes that evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. Each photograph tells a story, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its surreal atmosphere.

What I admire most about Crewdson’s work is his exploration of suburban life and the uncanny. His photographs often depict moments of isolation and introspection, capturing the beauty and strangeness of the everyday.

If you haven’t discovered Gregory Crewdson’s work, I highly recommend checking where you have a chance to see the large prints live. His ability to blend photography and cinematic storytelling is truly inspiring and works best when viewing the original prints.
