Luzerner Zeitung - Piazza

by Romano Cuonz

Lambertz photographs such Swiss houses, which have offered shelter to many people for centuries. Preferably those with wrinkled faces and whimsical stories. In other words, not the beautiful, picture-perfect buildings. Rather, in the photo book with the slightly ironic title "Chalets of Switzerland," he shows us worn-out, at first glance unaesthetic houses whose days are often numbered. With this work, Lambertz has even achieved an international breakthrough as a photographer.

Linthzeitung

by Bruno Glaus

The voyage of discovery through the Linth region that Patrick Lambertz offers us is feasible without a declaration of liability. In his new book "Chalets of Switzerland", the art photographer living in Lachen aestheticizes singular types from the housing construction of the last and penultimate century. No mansions, no villas, no Bernese chalets with far-reaching roofs. [...] The photographer transfers the dignity and value of the stately chalet to the dwelling house of the rural lower class.

by Stefan Fischer

Because you see nothing but the houses, you see the houses

At their best, houses are homes. Photographer Patrick Lambertz makes this clear in his photographs of nearly three dozen chalets in Switzerland in a remarkable, almost paradoxical way: For he robs these houses of almost any context in his pictures.

And because you see nothing but the houses, you see the houses. Not as part of a landscape in which they might seem like decoration, because the mountain flank behind them is spectacular, or because something is happening in the pastures, in the woods, or on the streets around them that attracts curiosity. No, one looks at the facades of the chalets as if they were faces. Patrick Lambertz's photographs of these houses are portraits.

BIANCO - Alpine Lifestyle Magazine

Bianco.swiss

by Wolfram Meister

"With his camera, Lambertz does not portray architectural beauties, but rather weatherproof character types, all of which have aged a bit, have probably left their best days behind them, but would all have quite a few stories to tell. Spared from the rampant building and renovation mania in Switzerland, Patrick Lambertz's old and ancient Swiss houses seem like silent solitaires. In which, if you look a little longer and a little more, you might even recognize faces."

by Daniel Anker

"On the one hand, Lambertz's series opens up a space for a deeper engagement with Switzerland and its architectural history, but on the other hand it also allows for a careful questioning of Switzerland and its perfectly staged clichés as a whole by turning precisely those houses into protagonists that elude the image of the ideal alpine world."

White islands of time - by Freddy Langer

"One building is more beautiful than the other. Enchanting, romantic and inviting, how they radiate comfort there in colorful tones in the midst of a bone-chilling cold - at the same time frozen into the image in the most sober documentary style. Sometimes trees with their scraggly branches reach into nothingness in the background. Often, however, the houses simply float as if in a vacuum. A wonderful book."

Book Launch "Chalets of Switzerland"

The chalet, a luxurious and romantic remote mountain hut that exists in “splendid isolation” in a sunny winter landscape — this is one of the most popular cliché images of Switzerland. However, the actual meaning of the term “chalet”, derived from the Latin word cala: “protected place”, is simply that of an Alpine dairy hut oder shelter.
On his many trips through his adopted home, Patrick Lambertz has run into many houses that do not conform to the chliché of the Swiss chalet. They are old houses that barely managed to escape the building and renovation boom that has plagued the country for decades. By photographing them in front of a wintery backdrop he abstracts these houses from their context, heightens their individual character, and provides them with an aura of poetry and irony. Following the tradition of Karl Blossfeldt and Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lambertz creates a typological canon of forgotten, yet memorable Swiss houses. Nature itself provides the photo studio: cloudy skies and dense fog provide soft light with little contrast. Snow covered mountains and hills deliver the neutral backdrop.
SYB, the legendary photobook designer from The Hague and master of the “Dutch altar fold”, developed a congenial minimalist concept for the book of Patrick Lambertz’s photographs from the Swiss mountains. The houses are made to steadily appear and disappear from the wintery paper white.

ATLAS OF PLACES
by Thomas Paturet

Atlas of Places is a public educational collection of Academia, Architecture, Cartography, Cinema, Essays, Painting, Photography and Research. Its objective is to question the meaning of places. It is curated according to continuously evolving philosophical, social and cultural beliefs. This is merely an occasional collection. Some works date from 1230, some from the recent past, some from the present. They have this characteristic in common that they are outlooks, in the truest sense of the word. In them will be found little more than the intention of clarifying a few ideas that might really be called political if that fine word, so attractive and exciting to the mind, did not arouse today so many great scruples and great repugnance.

Atlas of Places is an excellent collection curated by Thomas Paturet and definitely worth a visit.

"These chalets do point to a simpler and humbler way of living, set apart from the modern urban lifestyle that most Swiss people live. It makes me think of the quest for more authentic living in natural settings, as described by J.J. Rousseau. Please Swiss Info, give us more pictures of chalets throughout Switzerland. They are a gentle reminder to me to live authentically."
